Bahrain Hospital Pioneers Groundbreaking Keratoconus Surgery
Manama: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, Dr. Haifa Eye Hospital has successfully performed the Kingdom's first Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments (CAIRS) procedure using human tissue to treat keratoconus, a progressive eye condition causing distorted vision. The surgery, led by Dr. Abdulhameed Hashem, Consultant of Ophthalmology and Specialist in Corneal Diseases, Cataracts and Vision Correction Operations at the hospital, marks a significant advancement in Bahrain's ophthalmology sector.
This pioneering technique involves implanting natural corneal tissue rings to reshape the cornea, reduce astigmatism and improve visual acuity. Unlike traditional plastic rings, CAIRS offers superior biocompatibility and lower complication rates, making it an ideal solution for patients unsuitable for artificial implants.
The 15-minute procedure leveraged advanced 3D corneal imaging and precise planning, showcasing the hospital’s expertise. Dr. Hashem reported excellent results for the procedure with patients regaining vision within days and minimal complications. This achievement positions Bahrain as a regional hub for modern corneal surgery and paves the way for expanded treatment options.
