The Bahrain Red Crescent Society (BRCS), in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), recently concluded an advanced training workshop focused on mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) in emergencies.

The three-day workshop, held from September 22 to 24 at the Society's headquarters, aimed to significantly build the capacity of volunteers and specialists, ensuring they can provide essential psychological care during times of crisis.

The intensive sessions were led by Mrs. Islam Al Araj, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Projects Coordinator at the ICRC, and Mrs. Mayser Awadallah, Head of Health Awareness at the Bahrain Red Crescent Society. More than 18 trainees participated, including BRCS volunteers and specialists from the Psychiatric Hospital and Serene Hospital, fostering a multi-disciplinary approach to crisis management.

The program covered a critical curriculum, focusing on the impact of emergencies on individuals and communities. Key topics included an introduction to mental health and the pyramid of interventions, Strategies for managing stress, trauma, loss, and grief, Techniques for coping with psychological pressure, Approaches to working with children and ensuring proper case assessment and referral pathways.

Mrs. Mayser Awadallah emphasized that the workshop aligns with the BRCS's commitment to strengthening its humanitarian interventions and enhancing its response to community needs. She highlighted that building a qualified team in psychosocial support is a top priority, ensuring assistance extends beyond material aid to include the equally vital psychological dimension during crises.

Mrs. Awadallah added that strengthening partnerships with the ICRC and other humanitarian organizations is crucial for unifying efforts and improving field response. The Society affirmed its dedication to maintaining these training programs, ensuring an integrated and well-prepared team is ready to provide effective support to those affected, regardless of the circumstances.
