The High Criminal Court yesterday jailed a company owner for three years for withholding VAT he had collected, ordered repayment of BD65,102.068 with a matching fine, and fined the company’s registration BD195,306.204.
The case began with a complaint from the National Bureau for Revenue that the defendant filed VAT returns while keeping the tax taken from customers.
Checks by the Bureau showed the company was registered for VAT and that returns were lodged without paying over the sums collected.
Inquiry
The Public Prosecution opened an inquiry on receipt of the complaint.
It placed a travel ban on the defendant, took statements from NBR staff and examined records and invoices tied to the transactions.
When questioned and shown the file, the defendant admitted the charge.
The Prosecution sent both the individual and the commercial registration (as the legal person) to the First High Criminal Court, which delivered the verdict.
