Bahrain Court Begins Trial of Three Asians in Marijuana Smuggling Case
The High Criminal Court has begun hearing the case of three Asian nationals accused of attempting to smuggle over 3 kilograms of marijuana into Bahrain by concealing the drugs inside a suitcase in a manner designed to evade detection. The court has adjourned the next session to September 22 to hear the defendants’ arguments.
According to case details, authorities received a report from the Customs Department about the first defendant arriving from an Asian country with a suitcase containing a herbal substance suspected to be narcotics. Upon inspection at Bahrain International Airport, officials confirmed the substance was marijuana.
A witness revealed that the defendant’s luggage was delayed and only arrived eight days after his entry into Bahrain. Investigations indicated that the first defendant was part of an organized drug trafficking network led by an individual based in an Asian country. The second and third defendants reportedly recruited the first defendant and handed him the drugs for distribution within Bahrain.
Customs officers testified that during routine checks, the suspect’s suitcase drew attention due to the presence of numerous small, unclear packages. The suitcase was scanned using a red-ray scanner, revealing over 3 kilograms of green herbal material with a distinctive smell, later confirmed to be marijuana.
During the trial, the prosecution noted that the first defendant admitted to possessing the drugs. Laboratory tests confirmed the substance was marijuana, and evidence from his phone included images of herbal materials suspected to be drugs. Security camera footage showed that the second and third defendants’ movements through Bahrain International Airport coincided with the first defendant’s actions related to the case.
Further tests confirmed the presence of cannabis in the first defendant’s urine sample. The Public Prosecution charged all three defendants with bringing, possessing, and handling marijuana for the purpose of illegal trafficking. Additionally, the first defendant faced charges of possessing cannabis for personal use without legal authorization.
