MPs Push for 50% Discounts on All Services for Bahrain’s Senior Citizens

A group of MPs, led by MP Mohammed Al-Maarifi, has put forward a new proposal that aims to give senior citizens wider access to discounts on all government services and fees.

The proposal suggests amending Article 9 of the Senior Citizens’ Rights Law by introducing a special "Senior Service Card." Holders of this card would receive at least a 50% discount on all state-imposed fees and services. The initiative would also encourage private companies and institutions to offer discounts on daily necessities, including medicines, food, transport, and household items.

According to the proposal, the concerned ministry, in coordination with the relevant committee, would be responsible for issuing the card. The move is seen as a way to provide direct support to senior citizens, ease their living costs, and honor their lifelong contributions to the nation.

The explanatory note attached to the proposal highlights that this step reflects Bahrain’s commitment to comprehensive care for its elderly population. It emphasizes giving senior citizens tangible benefits in their daily lives—whether in healthcare, municipal services, or official transactions.

MP Mohammed Al-Maarifi stressed that the proposal reflects society’s appreciation for senior citizens and helps achieve social justice. He also noted that many developed countries already run similar programs, making this initiative a valuable addition to Bahrain’s social policies.

The proposal is expected to be discussed by the relevant parliamentary committees before moving forward for approval.
