The head of the Tax Evasion Crimes Unit at the Public Prosecution has announced that a man has been referred to criminal court for attempting to smuggle the banned tobacco product “tombak” into Bahrain through the King Fahd Causeway.

The case began when Customs Affairs at the Ministry of Interior reported that officers at the land border checkpoint caught the suspect with around 230 kilograms of the prohibited smokeless tobacco. The substance was hidden inside 29 packages concealed in the trunk of his vehicle.

Authorities seized the contraband and the car, and the Public Prosecution immediately launched an investigation. Customs officials involved in the operation provided testimony, while experts carried out laboratory tests confirming the nature of the seized material.

During questioning, the suspect admitted to the charges. He has been detained and will stand trial before the criminal court.
