The High Criminal Court of Appeal has toughened the sentence of a man involved in a deadly boating accident, increasing his prison term to three years.

According to the Public Prosecution, the incident occurred when the man, along with two foreign companions—who were previously convicted and deported—went on an illegal fishing trip. The man took his own boat out to sea without safety equipment, turned off the navigation lights, and disabled the boat’s tracking system to avoid detection by the Coast Guard.

On the way back, he was steering the boat under the influence of drugs, speeding, and ignoring international maritime collision rules. His reckless actions led to a collision with another boat carrying two people, who sustained fatal injuries.

The lower court had initially sentenced the man to six months in jail, but prosecutors appealed, arguing that the punishment did not reflect the seriousness of his actions or his disregard for human life.

Today, the appellate court agreed with the prosecution and increased his sentence to three years in prison.
