Electricity consumption in Bahrain has seen a steady increase over the last ten years, rising by nearly 15% from 16,552 gigawatts in 2015 to 19,000 gigawatts in 2024, according to newly released government data. This marks a total increase of 2,448 gigawatts over the decade.
The data also revealed how electricity was consumed across various sectors in 2024. The residential sector topped the list, using 9,321 gigawatts — nearly half of the total electricity consumed. The commercial sector followed with 6,211 gigawatts, then the industrial sector with 3,427 gigawatts. The agricultural sector consumed the least, using only 50 gigawatts.
In terms of percentage, households accounted for 49.03% of total electricity use, businesses 32.67%, industries 18.03%, and agriculture just 0.26%.
Electricity production also saw a modest increase. In 2024, Bahrain generated 19,009 gigawatts of electricity, up from 18,657 gigawatts in 2023 — a year-on-year growth of 1.88%.
A look at the numbers from previous years shows a gradual upward trend. In 2022, consumption stood at 18,294 gigawatts, compared to 18,020 in 2021 and 16,342 in 2020. The figures for earlier years include 17,027 gigawatts in 2019, 17,241 in 2018, 16,560 in 2017, and 16,490 in 2016.
The continued rise in electricity demand reflects Bahrain’s growing population, expanding infrastructure, and increased reliance on power across all sectors.
