Plans to build a public beach and nearby marina in Dumistan were approved yesterday by the Northern Municipal Council, with councillor Zainab Al Durazi calling for quick action from the authorities.
The two proposals, covering a 12,223 square metre stretch of coastline in Block 1017, were passed unanimously.
Maps have already been drawn up and submitted to the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture.
“A new site has been allocated for a public shore to serve the people of Dumistan,” said Al Durazi. “It’s a direct response to what residents have been asking for.”
The proposed beach would include shaded trees, restaurants, kiosks, walking paths, a play area, showers, toilets, night lighting, a bathing section, security cameras, signposts, a guard station, men’s and women’s prayer rooms, and car parking.
Al Durazi said the project would draw visitors and give local shops and small businesses a chance to grow.
“It gives families a place to breathe and spend their time,” she said. “And it helps bring life to the area.” The second proposal focuses on a marina for local fishermen.
Al Durazi said the lack of a proper dock has forced crews to use distant, unfit mooring spots.
“Fishermen have no safe place to anchor their boats. They risk damage or worse when storms hit,” she said. “Many of the small vessels are left without cover.”
Seafaring traditions
The councillor added that the marina would bring work through fishing, seafood sales and boat repairs, while also helping to preserve local seafaring traditions.
Once the ministry approves the plans, Al Durazi said she would present them to residents. She thanked the ministry and other relevant bodies for taking the time to look into the community’s requests.
