Bahrain has taken a major step toward securing its long-term food resilience with the launch of the Bahrain Food Holding Company ‘Ghitha’ strategy and the announcement of a landmark Food Park project, set to be among the largest of its kind in the Kingdom’s food sector.

The initiative, unveiled by His Excellency Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Minister of Finance and National Economy and Chairman of Mumtalakat, signals the start of an integrated national approach to food security.

Developed in alignment with the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the instructions of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, the plan aims to build a sustainable, innovation-led food ecosystem that supports the Kingdom’s citizens and economy.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, H.E. Shaikh Salman emphasised the urgency of food security and the role of Ghitha as a strategic platform for consolidating Bahrain’s food-related assets under Mumtalakat.

H.E. also revealed plans for a one million square metre Food Park in partnership with Edamah, describing it as an integrated industrial hub for food production, manufacturing, and distribution.

H.E. Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, CEO of Mumtalakat, and other senior officials attended the event, where the private sector’s role as a development partner was repeatedly highlighted.

The strategy encourages joint investments, innovation in production, and workforce development to increase local output while adhering to sustainability standards.

Integrated model

Ghitha’s strategy underscores a collaborative model that brings together government and private stakeholders to build a robust food supply chain.

According to the Minister, the initiative reflects Bahrain’s continued investment in value creation and portfolio integration across Mumtalakat’s food sector assets, while also unlocking future agricultural opportunities.

Basim Al Saie, Chairman of Ghitha, said the holding company would act as a catalyst for public-private partnerships in food manufacturing and logistics.

He reiterated Ghitha’s commitment to job creation and local capacity building, calling the Food Park a turning point in the Kingdom’s drive for healthy, home-grown food.

Bahrain’s new strategy comes at a time when global food systems face rising uncertainty, and it marks a decisive national move to strengthen local production, diversify investment, and prepare the Kingdom for future challenges.
