A man who smashed his car into a roadside barrier while drunk has been fined BD1,000 by the Lower Criminal Court for damaging public property. The incident took place on a public road.
The man, said to be heavily intoxicated, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a metal fence.
He had also failed to leave enough space between his car and the one in front, according to the case file.
The impact caused visible damage and the matter was referred to prosecutors.
Lawyer Taqi Hussain, representing the defendant, told the court his client had stopped drinking after the crash and had since changed his ways. This, he said, was his first runin with the law.
The lawyer added that the defendant had been young at the time and described it as a phase marked by recklessness.
Criminal intent
He denied any criminal intent and argued that the event was no more than an error in judgement. He also said a prison sentence would harm the man’s ability to support his family and might worsen his medical condition.
Judges reviewed the documents and legal submissions.
