Work on critical road projects in Muharraq — including long-awaited upgrades to Shaikh Abdulla Avenue and Block 202 — continues to face unexplained delays, according to the chairman of the Muharraq Municipal Council’s Services and Public Facilities Committee.
Abdulqader Al Sayyed voiced strong frustration over the slow and inconsistent pace of progress, calling the situation unacceptable given the strategic importance of the area.
“We were encouraged by the royal directive to revitalise Muharraq and turn it into a place its people want to return to — with solid infrastructure and reliable services,” he said. “But those responsible seem to be dragging their feet. Promised works are being postponed again and again.”
Al Sayyed revealed that more than 20 development projects across Muharraq had been officially approved, yet few had actually moved forward. In some cases, the council was left entirely in the dark. “We’re not even informed — we have to chase updates ourselves,” he said.
He also questioned the credibility of some of the explanations offered. “We’ve reviewed several of the justifications, and frankly, they don’t add up.”
Citing Block 202 as a prime example, Al Sayyed said the road revamp was initially slated for 2024 but had been delayed multiple times without a clear reason. “At one point, a government department was blamed. But our follow-up showed they had completed their responsibilities on time and cooperated fully.”
He urged the authorities to accelerate implementation and strengthen accountability. “These are well-established neighbourhoods. People have waited long enough. The plans are drawn up, the budget is approved — what’s lacking is proper execution,” he said.
