More than 55,000 pills were found hidden inside table tennis bats and balls in a parcel from abroad.

The discovery led to the arrest of three men and the dismantling of a smuggling ring.

The consignment, which held 55,335 tablets, appeared to contain ordinary sports equipment.

Customs officers became suspicious after scanning the parcel, which was addressed to a man in Bahrain.

Although the contents looked like table tennis gear, the scan raised questions.

On inspection, officers discovered that the bats and balls had been hollowed out and packed with pharmaceutical tablets believed to be mind-altering substances.

The parcel had been shipped in the name of an Asian man who later claimed he could not collect it himself.

Original He asked for it to be delivered to his residence and gave the name and address of a building guard to receive it. A fake parcel was prepared to mirror the original.
