Boats parked in Riffa’s streets and public spaces have led MPs to push for a dedicated port, with Parliament set to debate the matter today. Residents have been parking their boats in neighbourhoods and public areas due to a lack of docking spaces, adding to traffic congestion and taking up parking spots.
The proposal, put forward by MPs Bader Al Tamimi, Abdulla Al Dhaen, Dr Al Nuaimi, Hamad Al Doy and Abdulhakim Al Sheno, calls for the construction of a maritime port in the Southern Governorate to address the issue and support the fishing trade.
MP Al Tamimi said the measure was aimed at easing pressures on residential areas while providing boat owners with a proper facility.
History
“Fishing is part of Bahrain’s history, and many families have passed it down through the generations. Without a designated port, boat owners have no choice but to leave their vessels wherever they can, which causes trouble for residents and leaves boats open to theft and damage,” he said.
The Public Utilities and Environment Committee has reviewed the proposal and is in favour of it, saying the plan would help ease the strain on local roads and homes.
The Southern Municipal Council has also raised no objections.
Concerns
However, the Supreme Council for Environment has suggested moving the project elsewhere, citing concerns about access to the proposed site.
MPs backing the plan say that unless steps are taken, more boats will continue to fill streets and public spaces, increasing tensions over traffic and parking.
The proposal will be discussed in Parliament today, with MPs urging the government to give its approval.
