A man and his nephew have been jailed for 10 years after dousing the uncle’s ex-wife with sulphuric acid, leaving her with burns that caused lasting damage to 60 per cent of her body.
The High Criminal Court also referred the civil case to the relevant court for damages.
The attack took place in a shopping centre car park, where the masked nephew lay in wait.
As the woman left the mall with her daughters, aged nine and 11, he ran at her with a plastic container, flung its contents over her, and fled.
The acid ate into her skin, leaving her in agony. The two girls saw everything.
The first accused, 28, admitted in court that he carried out the attack, saying he had been pushed into it by his uncle and cousin. He also claimed they gave him pills beforehand.
Prosecutors said the second accused, 41, the victim’s ex-husband, had goaded the younger man into attacking her, plotting with him and helping him pull it off.
The victim told the court that on the day of the attack, she and her daughters spotted a masked man in the car park.
She thought it might be her ex-husband and went to take a photo of him.
The next thing she knew, the liquid was burning through her clothes and skin.
A witness who was sitting in her car at the time said the victim’s daughters had rung her, frightened by the masked man.
She drove towards them and spotted him herself. When she told the victim, the woman walked towards him with her phone out. But before she could take a picture, he rushed at her, threw the liquid, and ran.
