Bahrain has received commendation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for its contributions to fostering global peace and tolerance. The OHCHR specifically highlighted the efforts of the King Hamad Global Centre for Peaceful Coexistence, particularly its educational initiatives like the Joint Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Peaceful Coexistence.
This programme, developed in collaboration with the United Nations-mandated University for Peace and the Gioia Institute for Higher Education in Malta, aims to promote peacebuilding and intercultural understanding across the globe.
The recognition is part of a report to be presented during the oral update by Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, at the 58th High-Level Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, scheduled from February 24 to April 4.
Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the King Hamad Global Centre for Peaceful Coexistence, expressed that the acknowledgment reflects His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s humanitarian vision, with strong support from His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. This vision underscores the promotion of peace, interfaith harmony, and freedom of belief.
The Joint Postgraduate Diploma Programme has successfully graduated 50 students from 19 countries, equipping them with expertise in coexistence, international law, cultural diplomacy, human rights, and empowerment of youth and women.
