Call for action on scavenger carts

Scavenger carts are scratching cars, blocking streets, and scattering rubbish across neighbourhoods in the Southern Governorate, councillors demand action.

Residents are increasingly angry about these makeshift carts, pulled through streets by informal workers collecting scrap materials.

Complaints have been raised about damaged vehicles, disrupted traffic, and growing safety concerns.

The Southern Municipal Council has called on authorities to take immediate steps to address the issue.

Distress

“This is about safety and cleanliness,” said Councillor Ahmed Abdulla Al Abdulla, who raised the matter. “People park their cars at home, only to find scratches and dents caused by these carts. It’s causing distress and needs a solution.”

The problem extends beyond damaged vehicles.

Workers rummaging through bins for recyclables often tear open rubbish bags, leaving waste strewn across pavements and around collection points.

This has led to bad smells, an increase in vermin and insects, and concerns about public health.

Waste management

“Bahrain invests heavily in waste management, but these carts undermine those efforts,” said Al Abdulla. “Recycling should be organised and systematic, not left to informal scavenging that leaves our streets in disarray.”

The council discussed the issue with representatives from the executive body and the General Directorate of Traffic, although officials from the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), invited to address the role of unregulated workers, did not attend.

Councillors are urging the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture to take charge.
