Bahrain ranked fifth in Asia by top UN survey on e-governance

Manama : The 2018 United Nations eGovernment Development Index has offered fifth rank in Asia to Bahrain, stressing the Kingdom’s e-governance strides. The Kingdom also achieved a high ranking of 26th internationally.

This makes Bahrain one of two Arab countries to be categorised as ‘Very high E–Government Development Index’ (EDGI) countries by the UN. Only 40 countries received the ‘Very High in EDGI’ classification amongst 193 countries that were evaluated. Denmark, Australia, and Republic of Korea came out on top of the 40 countries.

Ranked 21st, the UAE was the only Arab country that ranked higher than Bahrain ranking at 21st. The countries that ranked above Bahrain in Asia are Republic of Korea, Singapore, Japan, and the UAE. Bahrain achieved an Online Service Index (OSI) of 0.7986, EDGI of 0.8116 and Human Capital Index (HSI) of 0.7897.

In its comments on the GCC, the report stated that the countries have managed to make good progress in recent years. “United Arab Emirates has the highest EGDI among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries followed by Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.” The GCC countries managed to achieve a series of substantial accomplishments related to improving e-government systems and making it easier for citizens to access government portals of other GCC member states.
