Suspected Landmine Blast Injures Three in South Korea’s DMZ

Three South Korean military troops were injured Monday during a search operation inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that separates South and North Korea, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The blast occurred at about 10:50 a.m. local time in the western sector of the DMZ, south of the Military Demarcation Line. The men, from the Army's 25th Infantry Division's frontline unit, were said to be conducting a route-clearing operation to identify mines and other explosives and construct a safe passage. The military believes a landmine may have detonated, but it has not identified who put it.

Authorities are looking into many possibilities, including a South Korean mine, a mine installed by North Korean soldiers, or a mine that was washed southward by strong rains from North Korea.

Two of the injured were flown by helicopter to the Armed Forces Capital Hospital outside Seoul. One person sustained a severe ankle injury that necessitated amputation surgery, although the injury was not considered life-threatening. The third injured officer, as well as other operation staff, were taken for medical exams.

The incident occurred amid increased military activity along the inter-Korean border. South Korean officials have previously detected indicators that North Korea is bolstering its border defences, such as the installation of mines and the construction of barricades and tactical roadways.

However, there is currently no confirmation that North Korea planted the mine that caused Monday's explosion. The JCS has stated that it will look into all potential causes.
