Trump says US reviewing position on Falkland Islands

Washington: US President Donald Trump said Monday that Washington is reconsidering its stance on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, a remote British-ruled enclave in the South Atlantic that Argentina also claims. When asked about the subject in the Oval Office, Trump said he often analyses US policy stances but did not say whether the review will result in a shift in Washington's posture.

Since the 1982 Falklands War, the United States has remained neutral on the sovereignty dispute, though it did back Britain during that fight. Argentina, however, claims the islands as the Malvinas, and President Javier Milei maintains close ties with Trump.

Trump's remarks follow reports that the Pentagon was considering revising US policy toward the Falklands as part of broader measures to put pressure on NATO partners over defence budget and their support for US military operations. Any move by Washington may have serious diplomatic consequences for relations between the United States, Britain, and Argentina.
