Sydney: Australian officials have charged a 27-year-old dual Russian-Australian citizen with attempting to engage in purposeful foreign interference, claiming he attempted to send information regarding Ukrainian military activity to individuals he suspected were connected to Russian intelligence.

The Australian Federal Police allege that the individual flew to Russia in October 2024 for military-style training before returning to Australia. In May 2025, he allegedly flew to Ukraine and joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces, getting access to information regarding military individuals, units, and positions.

Investigators say he later attempted to transfer the material to others he believed were working for Russian intelligence. Authorities stated that the alleged conduct jeopardised the safety of Ukrainian military troops.

The man was detained in Brisbane on August 20 and is scheduled to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court. The charge of attempting to engage in purposeful foreign influence carries up to 20 years in jail. Police said there is currently no indication of a threat to Australia, while the investigation continues.
