Ukraine Wants European Anti-Ballistic Missile Prototype By Mid-2027

Kyiv: Ukraine is urging European allies to produce a prototype of a new anti-ballistic missile defense system, codenamed Freyja, by mid-2027.
Davyd Aloian, deputy secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, emphasized the urgent need for practical results to reduce Kyiv's reliance on scarce U.S.-made Patriot systems. Patriots currently remain Ukraine's only reliable defense against incoming Russian ballistic strikes.
The Freyja project operates on an open system architecture, allowing participating nations to integrate interchangeable components like specialized radars.
Ukraine plans to supply launchers and interceptor missiles, while European defense firms including Saab, Thales, Eurosam, and Leonardo will provide advanced guidance systems and control electronics. Ukrainian firm Fire Point will serve as the lead industrial partner.
Ten European countries established the anti-ballistic coalition in Paris following intensified Russian missile bombardments. Officials now aim to set up a dedicated financing fund to bypass red tape and ensure rapid system deployment.
