London: Germany supports the delivery of 50,000 attack drones to Ukraine under a contract for approximately €90 million ($103 million), making it one of the most significant known Western drone acquisitions for Kyiv since the war with Russia began.
The order includes Shrike first-person-view (FPV) drones built by Ukrainian military business SkyFall and outfitted with autonomous targeting software from U.S. company Auterion. The software enables the drones to follow and strike moving targets during their last phase of flight.
Auterion CEO Lorenz Meier acknowledged the contract's size and value, noting that some drones have already been deployed and that the rest units are due to arrive in Ukraine later this year. Germany's Defence Ministry declined to comment, citing operational security concerns, while Ukraine's Defence Ministry did not provide any information.
The move comes as Ukraine is increasingly relying on drones in its defence against Russian forces. A recent U.S. Pentagon challenge for one-way attack drones saw a Shrike drone derivative score well, underscoring the expanding significance of inexpensive, AI-assisted technologies in contemporary combat.
