Houston: The son of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52 years old Mexican national who was fatally shot by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Houston, has sought an independent investigation, claiming his father ‘did not deserve this’ and that the family want transparency and justice.

Salgado Araujo, who has resided in the United States for over 30 years and worked in construction, was driving to a job site on Tuesday when ICE authorities sought to stop him during what the agency described as a targeted immigration enforcement operation. According to ICE, the officer opened fire when Salgado Araujo allegedly attempted to attack officers with his vehicle, an allegation his family disputes.

His son, Ronaldo Salgado, described his father as a hard-working family guy with no criminal convictions who was in the process of regularising his immigration status. He questioned the use of lethal force and called for an independent investigation instead of an internal federal assessment.

The incident sparked protests in Houston, with immigrant rights organisations, local politicians, and Mexican officials calling for greater transparency. The Department of Homeland Security has initiated an investigation, but human rights advocates continue to call for an impartial investigation of the incident.
