Damascus: At least 18 people, including four police officers, were injured after two explosive devices detonated in central Damascus on Tuesday, near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron had been staying, Syrian authorities said.
The blasts occurred about 125 metres from the Four Seasons Hotel, but French officials said Macron was safe and did not hear the explosions as he travelled to meet Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the presidential palace.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, and no group immediately claimed responsibility.
Despite the incident, the French presidency said Macron's visit would continue as planned before he travels to Turkey for the NATO summit. The attack highlights ongoing security challenges in Syria despite efforts by the country's new leadership to restore stability following the fall of the Assad government.
