Khartoum: At least 330 children were killed or injured across Sudan during the first six months of 2026, with Darfur and Kordofan recording the highest number of child casualties, according to UNICEF.

The UN agency said the situation in North Kordofan, particularly around Al Obeid, has become increasingly alarming. Since May, drone strikes and other attacks have reportedly killed at least 18 children and injured more than 17 others, with victims ranging in age from two months to 17 years. Drone strikes accounted for around 60 per cent of the reported child casualties.

UNICEF said repeated attacks have damaged homes, schools, hospitals, water systems and markets, while disrupting vital supply routes and putting essential services under severe strain. The agency warned that around 500,000 civilians in and around Al Obeid remain at risk if the security situation deteriorates further.

“Children are being caught in a relentless cycle of violence, displacement and deprivation,” said Sheldon Yett, UNICEF Representative for Sudan. “For many children, there is no safe place left. They are being killed and injured in their homes, on the roads, in markets, and while attempting to access essential services such as education and healthcare.”

Beyond the immediate threat of death and injury, UNICEF said children continue to face grave risks including recruitment by armed groups, abduction, sexual violence, and attacks on schools and hospitals. The agency urged all parties to the conflict to protect civilians, safeguard critical infrastructure, and allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access.
