Negombo: At least 20 people were killed and more than 100 others injured after violent clashes erupted at Negombo Prison, north of Sri Lanka's capital Colombo, authorities said on Monday.
The violence began on Sunday and continued into Monday, prompting a heavy police deployment around the prison. Television footage showed buses transporting injured inmates from the facility as emergency teams responded to the unrest.
Hospital officials said 16 inmates and four prison guards were among those killed. Negombo Hospital Director Pushpa Gamlath said the hospital had received 23 bodies and admitted more than 100 injured inmates and prison staff for treatment.
Police spokesman Chandana Herath confirmed fatalities had occurred during the clashes but did not provide further details.
Authorities said the violence has since been brought under control. Initial reports indicate the unrest stemmed from clashes between two rival inmate factions, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
