Los Angeles: Universal's Minions & Monsters debuted at the top of the North American box office over the weekend, earning an estimated $36.4 million and pushing Toy Story 5 from the number one spot.

The latest installment in the Minions franchise, featuring the popular yellow animated characters, also generated an additional $98 million internationally despite recording the series' lowest opening weekend in North America.

Disney-Pixar's Toy Story 5, which had posted the year's biggest domestic opening two weeks earlier, fell to second place with $31 million in ticket sales.

Debuting in third place was Young Washington, a historical drama about the early military career of George Washington, which earned $20.8 million during the Independence Day holiday weekend.

Warner Bros' Supergirl slipped to fourth place with $9.6 million in its second weekend, while Steven Spielberg's sci-fi thriller Disclosure Day rounded out the top five with $6 million, bringing its domestic total to $105 million.
