San José: Scientists may have discovered a potential new species of ghost shark in Costa Rica, marking a significant breakthrough for deep-sea research.

The unique marine creature was located during scientific explorations in the Pacific waters surrounding Cabo Blanco and Cano Island.

According to Arturo Angulo Sibaja, a biology professor at the University of Costa Rica, this latest discovery exhibits distinct physical variations that separate it from other known ghost shark species.

Professor Angulo Sibaja notes that the newly found specimen features a noticeably shorter snout, a distinctively darker coloration pattern, and a much longer spine on its dorsal fin.

The significant find was formally documented and studied by researchers at the University of Costa Rica. By analyzing these specific morphological traits, the scientific community aims to better map the region's diverse marine life, highlighting the rich and largely unexplored biodiversity hidden within the deep Pacific.
