Washington: US President Donald Trump warned of what he described as a renewed threat to America's identity during a patriotic speech at Mount Rushmore on Thursday, accusing domestic 'radicals and extremists' of trying to undermine the country's values and history.

Speaking on the eve of the United States' 250th Independence Day celebrations, Trump praised American exceptionalism and the nation's past leaders while portraying the rise of the political left as a major challenge facing the country.

"As we approach this magnificent anniversary, we see our American identity under a renewed attack," Trump said, adding that there had been 'a resurgence of the communist menace' in the United States.

The remarks reflect a message Trump has increasingly emphasized ahead of November's midterm elections, as progressive candidates have gained momentum within the Democratic Party. He has repeatedly characterized left-wing political movements as a threat to American traditions and institutions.

Trump also accused political opponents of attempting to distance Americans from their history and national identity, saying that those who seek to become part of the country should embrace its values and achievements.

The speech at Mount Rushmore marked the beginning of Trump's planned celebrations for the nation's 250th anniversary, which include a July 4 rally in Washington featuring military flyovers and large-scale fireworks displays.

The celebrations come at a time of deep political division in the United States, with recent polls showing many Americans believe the country is falling short of the ideals outlined in the Declaration of Independence.
