Thousands march against illegal migrants in South Africa

Johannesburg: Thousands of people marched around South Africa demanding the expulsion of undocumented migrants, accusing them of taking jobs and putting extra pressure on public services.

The demonstrations were held in major cities like as Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town, with substantial police presence. Despite heightened tensions, the majority of protests remained nonviolent.

President Cyril Ramaphosa encouraged calm, criticising vigilantism and emphasising that only the government can implement immigration rules.

Human rights groups have warned against increased xenophobia, claiming that migrants are being unfairly blamed for South Africa's economic and social problems.
