Mexico City: Two dead after massive World Cup celebrations turned into a fatal crowd crush in downtown Mexico City. The tragedy struck as more than a million ecstatic fans packed the capital's streets to celebrate the national football team's historic 2-0 victory over Ecuador.
The landmark triumph successfully broke a 40-year knockout stage curse, advancing the tournament co-hosts into the Round of 16. However, the overwhelming street euphoria quickly turned hazardous near major monuments, causing fatal suffocation amidst the dense crowds. First responders arrived promptly but were unable to revive the victims.
