Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Approaches 1,500 as Rescue Efforts Continue

The death toll from the powerful twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last Wednesday has climbed to nearly 1,500, as search and rescue operations continue in the country's worst-hit areas.
International rescue teams have arrived in the coastal state of La Guaira, about 40 kilometres north of Caracas, where dozens of buildings collapsed, leaving large areas buried under rubble.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck approximately 160 kilometres west of Caracas, followed less than a minute later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 tremor.
Emergency crews continue to search for survivors while authorities assess the full extent of the destruction caused by the back-to-back earthquakes.
