UK to Expand Refugee Sponsorship Schemes

LONDON: The UK interior ministry has announced the creation of new legal routes for asylum seekers by expanding its refugee sponsorship schemes.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed that community organizations and trusted universities will be permitted to sponsor refugees under a new system modeled after Canada.
The upcoming program is scheduled to take effect later this year, with the first arrivals expected to land in autumn 2027. Additionally, the Home Office plans to introduce a separate route next year allowing employers to directly sponsor refugees.
Officials noted that while the new scheme will be capped, it will operate at a much higher capacity than previous resettlement initiatives.
This policy shift arrives during a turbulent political period, just as Keir Starmer stepped down as prime minister this week.
His government is preparing to introduce strict new legislation next week to tighten asylum rules, making deportations easier and restricting refugee family reunions.
It remains uncertain if Mahmood will retain her post under Starmer’s potential successor, Andy Burnham.
Despite facing recent criticism over tough immigration regulations, Mahmood stated the new sponsorship network aims to open genuine legal paths while closing frequently abused loopholes.
