Starmer Resignation Puts EU-UK July Summit Under Review

Brussels: The European Union said on Monday that it is reviewing preparations for the next EU-UK meeting on July 22 in reaction to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's resignation announcement. European Commission spokesmen said discussions with the UK government and European Council President António Costa are ongoing to determine whether the summit should proceed as planned.
A representative for the European Commission stressed that the political volatility in Britain had no bearing on the two nations' overall relationship, saying that EU-UK ties ‘are and will remain strong’ despite the change in leadership.
The summit was announced last week with the goal of strengthening post-Brexit cooperation on trade, security, and other common goals. Since Britain's exit from the EU, this would have been the second formal meeting between the two countries.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also commended Starmer's leadership, saying that his term had enhanced security in both Europe and Ukraine and that he had become "a statesman" in just two years.
