Abiy's Party Tightens Grip on Power Amid Security Challenges

Addis Ababa: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's Prosperity Party has strengthened its hold on power after dominating recent elections, extending the leader's influence despite ongoing security challenges and criticism over democratic backsliding.

Abiy came to power in 2018 following mass anti-government protests and was initially praised for introducing political reforms, including releasing prisoners, lifting restrictions on opposition groups and improving ties with neighbouring Eritrea. His efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019.

However, critics and human rights groups say many of those reforms have since been reversed, pointing to arrests of journalists and restrictions on civil society organisations.

Ethiopia continues to face instability in several regions. Armed violence persists in Oromia and Amhara, where Fano fighters have controlled parts of the countryside since 2023. Concerns have also resurfaced in the northern Tigray region, where tensions have increased despite a 2022 peace agreement that ended a devastating two-year civil war that researchers say killed hundreds of thousands of people.

The electoral board did not hold voting in Tigray, citing security concerns and unfavourable conditions.

Despite the political and security challenges, the government is forecasting economic growth of more than 10 percent in 2026, which would make Ethiopia one of Africa's fastest-growing economies.
