India Bars Over-the-Counter Sale of Cough Syrups

New Delhi: India has prohibited the over-the-counter selling of cough syrups, making a valid doctor's prescription required for buying them. The judgement follows an amendment to the Drugs Rules that removes syrup-based medicines from the list of products exempt from prescription requirements. The new restrictions only allow sales through certified pharmacies with a prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

The action, according to the government, is intended to improve regulatory control, reduce cough syrup overuse, and strengthen patient safety. Authorities have also voiced concerns over the recreational use of certain cough syrups, particularly containing codeine products.

The new regulations come as Indian-made cough syrups are linked to contamination incidents that killed dozens of children in countries such as The Gambia, Uzbekistan, and Cameroon. The accidents drew global attention to India's pharmaceutical production standards, prompting tighter quality controls and regulatory changes.

The new restrictions are limited to syrup-based cough medications. Other cough medicines, such as pills, capsules, and lozenges, that do not require a prescription under current standards will remain available over the counter. The government stated that the modifications are aimed to ensure cough syrups are used safely and under adequate medical supervision.
