NEW YORK: An 18-year-old tourist from India died from severe head injuries after jumping from a runaway horse-drawn carriage in New York City’s Central Park.
The victim, Romanch Mahajan, was on his first vacation to the city with his family when the leisurely ride turned into a fatal disaster. According to authorities, the horse suddenly bolted and sprinted out of control after the driver stepped away from the vehicle to take a family photograph.
As the carriage accelerated across the sidewalks and grass, Romanch's mother, Priya, was thrown from the vehicle. In a desperate attempt to save her, Romanch leaped out after her but struck his head violently on the pavement.
He succumbed to his injuries the following day at the New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, while the rest of his family escaped with minor physical injuries.
The Transport Workers Union condemned the driver's actions as unacceptable, noting that operators are strictly forbidden from leaving their carriages to take photos under any circumstances. The driver has been suspended indefinitely, and the horse will be retired.
Meanwhile, the tragedy has reignited calls from public advocates and city officials to permanently ban horse-drawn carriages as part of proposed safety legislation.
