Dubai: Some UAE companies are allowing workers to work remotely or on hybrid schedules during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as employers show chances for a possible decrease in production during the prolonged tournament.
According to human resources experts, many football fans in the Gulf region are likely to change their habits to watch matches that are being played overnight in Gulf time due to the tournament's host in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The World Cup lasts from June 11 to July 19.
According to a Gulf Talent poll, 84% of Middle Eastern professionals plan to watch at least a few matches, and almost three quarters of managers are willing to offer flexible arrangements such as late starts, time off, or remote work.
Many employees expect interrupted sleep cycles, with some choosing to start work late, take leave, or work from home following late-night matches. Employers are also looking at football-themed activities to boost morale and team spirit throughout the tournament.
While some firms are concerned about lower productivity, others see flexibility as a way to keep employees engaged and assure business continuity during one of the world's largest sporting events.
