ONTARIO: Canada has introduced the ‘Safe Social Media Act,’ a landmark proposal that could ban teenagers under 16 from accessing social media platforms. Culture Minister Marc Miller put forward the legislation in the House of Commons on Wednesday, marking a significant step in the government's effort to protect children from online harms.

The law is being proposed ahead of the upcoming G7 summit in France next week, where world leaders are expected to discuss and issue statements on AI and protecting children from online harm.

The proposed law is unique because it includes a ‘workaround’ for technology firms. Instead of an outright total ban, companies can avoid the age restriction if they demonstrate that their platforms meet specific safety standards.

This involves removing addictive algorithms, implementing robust age-verification systems, and providing clear reporting tools for harmful content.

Miller emphasised that the act aims to empower parents and hold tech giants accountable for the mental health of young users. Because this is currently just a legislative proposal, the bill must undergo parliamentary debate and voting before any regulations take effect.
