India Delays Starlink Launch

India has reportedly delayed granting final approval for Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service, as authorities examine security concerns linked to the company’s operations during recent geopolitical conflicts.
According to reports, security agencies under India’s Ministry of Home Affairs have not yet provided the final clearance required for Starlink to begin full commercial services in the country. The move comes despite the company obtaining a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) licence nearly a year ago.
While the licence allowed Starlink to carry out preparatory work and commercial planning, it does not authorise the company to launch full-scale operations.
Indian authorities are said to be scrutinising reports that Starlink terminals were used during the recent conflict involving Iran and the US-Israel alliance, including in areas where the service was not officially licensed. The reports have raised concerns about the oversight and regulation of foreign-controlled communications networks during periods of international tension.
Officials are reportedly assessing whether Starlink can fully comply with India’s national security requirements and whether authorities would have sufficient oversight in situations where network operations could be affected by external geopolitical developments.
The delay represents another regulatory hurdle for Starlink as it seeks to expand its global footprint. India is considered one of the world’s largest potential markets for satellite-based internet services, making approval in the country strategically important for the company’s long-term growth plans.
The development also comes at a time when SpaceX is preparing for major expansion initiatives, with Starlink expected to play a significant role in the company’s future revenues.
