US Nuclear Start-Up Reaches Key Milestone in Military Reactor Project

Washington DC: A US nuclear energy start-up has achieved a major breakthrough in developing compact reactors designed to power military bases and other strategic facilities.
Antares announced that its Mark-0 prototype had reached initial criticality, meaning it successfully generated a controlled, self-sustaining nuclear fission reaction — a crucial step toward producing electricity.
The company said it is the first private firm to achieve this milestone for a microreactor, a technology attracting growing interest as countries seek reliable low-carbon energy sources.
The Mark-0 project is among 11 microreactor programmes selected by the US Department of Energy under an initiative aimed at accelerating the development of advanced nuclear technologies.
Antares said the achievement moves it closer to deploying small-scale reactors that could provide power for military and remote operations within the next few years.
