FIFA bans reusable bottles at World Cup venues citing safety concerns

Zürich: FIFA has implemented a last-minute policy change ahead of the 2026 World Cup, banning spectators from bringing reusable water bottles into tournament venues across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This decision marks a sharp reversal from guidelines issued just last month, which explicitly permitted fans to carry empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles of up to one liter.
The updated Stadium Code of Conduct, which took effect Tuesday, now classifies reusable bottles alongside other prohibited items such as glass, cups, jars, and cans due to potential safety risks if thrown. FIFA emphasised its commitment to the health and safety of everyone inside the stadium footprint.
This change has drawn criticism and sparked concerns regarding spectator hydration, especially with high temperatures expected at several host locations. In response, FIFA stated it is collaborating with host cities on heat mitigation, including hydration stations and cooling tents, and assured fans that inside-stadium water prices will remain consistent with standard event pricing.
