EU-Pakistan Joint Communique Draws Criticism Over Kashmir-Ukraine Framing

ISLAMABAD: The eighth round of the EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue has drawn substantial flak after its official joint statement placed updates on Jammu and Kashmir alongside Russia's war in Ukraine.

The high-level dialogue was co-chaired on Monday in Islamabad by European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas and Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

During her visit, Kallas also met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir to discuss expanded trade, economic ties, and regional security.

However, the post-dialogue joint press communiqué sparked scrutiny by grouping both conflicts into the same section. The text stated that Pakistan briefed the EU on Jammu and Kashmir, while the EU side briefed Pakistan on Russia's war against Ukraine.

This framing drew immediate backlash for linking a long-standing territorial dispute with an active European war. Despite both sides reaffirming their commitment to peaceful dispute resolution via the UN Charter, the combined grouping overshadowed agreements on climate, digital infrastructure, and migration.
