Explosion Hits Cargo Ship Near Iraq Waters

 

A cargo vessel transiting in the Arabian Gulf was struck by an unknown projectile near Iraqi waters, prompting an investigation by maritime authorities, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

UKMTO received a report of an incident approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of Umm Qasr, Iraq, where a large explosion occurred after the vessel was hit on its starboard side.

The nature of the projectile has not yet been confirmed, and authorities have not attributed responsibility for the incident.

No environmental impact has been reported at this stage, UKMTO added.

Investigations are currently under way to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

Maritime authorities have advised all vessels operating in the area to proceed with caution and to report any suspicious activity to UKMTO as monitoring continues.
