Vientiane: Four men trapped inside a flooded cave in central Laos for 10 days have been rescued, a day after emergency teams freed another survivor, rescuers said.

The men were among seven Lao nationals who entered the cave in Xaysomboun province on May 20 in search of gold before flash floods cut off their escape route and trapped them deep underground.

Rescue teams located five survivors and began bringing them out of the cave in stages. One man was rescued on Wednesday, followed by four others on Thursday.

Two members of the group remain missing and search operations are continuing.

The rescue effort was complicated by rising water levels and the cave’s narrow passageways. Officials said some sections of the underground system were only about 50 centimetres wide, making access difficult for rescuers.

Authorities have not yet provided details on the condition of the rescued men, but the operation has drawn attention to the dangers faced by informal miners working in remote areas during the rainy season.
