Washington: Senior military officers from the United States and Cuba held a meeting at the Guantanamo Bay naval base on Friday as bilateral relations rapidly deteriorate over a threatened American takeover.

US General Francis Donovan met with Cuban General Roberto Legra Sotolongo for a brief exchange on critical operational security matters. Despite intensifying political friction, both delegations described the meeting as positive and agreed to maintain open communication channels between their respective military commands.

The high-stakes meeting comes as Cuba faces the brink of collapse due to a de facto US oil blockade and fresh sanctions targeting its global allies. Tensions further escalated following recent reports suggesting Havana was considering drone strikes on the base in the event of an American attack.

In response to these regional threats, Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan personally inspected all aspects of Naval Station Guantanamo Bay’s security posture.

He led a comprehensive perimeter security assessment and discussed vital force protection, operational readiness, and strategic safety measures for service members and their families with base officials. US Southern Command reiterated that the facility remains a vital operational hub necessary to counter threats against regional stability and security.
