EU moves to strengthen industries amid growing tensions with China

Brussels: The European Union is considering stronger trade protections and industrial measures to reduce dependence on China and shield key sectors from cheap imports, as tensions between Brussels and Beijing continue to rise.

European Commission officials discussed possible steps including tougher tariffs, import restrictions and supply chain diversification to protect industries such as chemicals, metals and clean technology.

EU leaders have expressed concern over growing reliance on China for critical minerals, rare earths and manufacturing supplies, warning that Europe’s industries face increasing pressure from subsidised Chinese exports.

China criticised the EU’s plans and warned it could respond with countermeasures if Brussels moves ahead with broader trade restrictions.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said the bloc would defend European industries and jobs against unfair competition, while stressing that the EU was seeking balanced trade rather than a trade war.

The issue is expected to be a major focus at an upcoming EU leaders’ summit in June as Europe looks to strengthen economic security and reduce strategic vulnerabilities linked to China.
