Washington: The death toll from a devastating chemical spill at a paper plant in the northwestern United States has risen to eight, following the recovery of six additional bodies.

Local emergency officials confirmed that a massive industrial storage tank containing tens of thousands of liters of ‘white liquor’ , a highly alkaline, caustic solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide used to break down wood chips, suddenly imploded during an early morning shift change.

First responders initially confirmed two fatalities, but extensive search operations led to the recovery of six more individuals from the debris. Three plant workers remain missing and are currently feared dead.

Search and rescue teams continue to navigate a highly volatile, active, and hazardous environment inside the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company facility to locate the missing personnel. Meanwhile, environmental and public safety officers have sought to reassure the surrounding community, reporting that continuous localized monitoring has detected no hazardous air or drinking water contamination.
