Berlin: German authorities are currently investigating more than 1,900 open missing children cases across the country, according to new figures released ahead of International Missing Children’s Day.

Data from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office showed that 1,933 children were officially listed as missing as of May 1, slightly higher than the 1,810 unresolved cases recorded a year earlier.

The figures include both recent disappearances and long-running unsolved cases, including one case dating back to 1957.

Despite the increase, German police said the vast majority of missing children reports are resolved successfully. Authorities recorded more than 19,000 missing children cases in 2025, with over 18,500 solved, resulting in a clearance rate of 96.5%.

Officials said most cases involving missing children are linked to parental abductions, repeated runaway incidents or unaccompanied minor refugees. Family disputes are also considered a major factor behind many disappearances.

The statistics cover children aged 13 and younger. Police said around 96% of missing children cases are resolved within three months.

Authorities stressed that only a very small number of cases involve suspected crimes, accidents or situations where there are fears that a child may have been seriously harmed or killed.
